How I Took My Family of 4 to Disneyland for $671 Using Points

The Trip That Changed How I Travel

I took my family of four to Disneyland for just $671 total. That covered our flights, hotel, and park tickets. And no, this wasn’t some crazy once-in-a-lifetime deal. We just used points in a smart way and took advantage of a few credit card benefits.

Flights

For our flights, we flew from our smaller hometown airport into Santa Ana. The flights were already inexpensive, so I paid cash instead of using points. They were $130 roundtrip per person, and we bought three tickets since my baby flew free. That brought our total flight cost to $390. This is something I always tell people. If flights are already cheap, save your points for something more expensive.

Hotel

For the hotel, we stayed at the Hyatt House Cypress/Anaheim for two nights. We used 20,000 Hyatt points per night, so 40,000 total. We needed a larger room for our family, but if you don’t, you can sometimes find rooms here for even fewer points. It also included breakfast, which made mornings a lot easier with kids. If you don’t already have Hyatt points, one of the easiest ways to get them is by earning Chase points and transferring them over. That’s how I book most of my hotel stays.

Disneyland Tickets

For Disneyland tickets, this is where we saved the most creatively. I used the $200 “splurge credit” from my Citi Strata Elite card to buy a Disney gift card from Best Buy. Then I used that gift card to purchase our park tickets. Each ticket was $129, so after applying the credit, we only paid $58 out of pocket. Both of our kids are under three, so they got in for free, which made a big difference.

Transportation

Transportation ended up being our most expensive category outside of flights. We spent about $223 on Ubers going between the airport, hotel, and Disneyland. If I were to do this trip again, I’d probably rent a car instead. With a family, it would likely be cheaper and a lot more convenient.

Total Cost

So altogether, we paid $671 for the entire trip. That’s for a family of four going to Disneyland, which still kind of blows my mind.

Can You Do This Too?

Even if you’re starting from scratch, this is very doable. Most of the points I use come from credit card welcome bonuses. That’s how I’m able to book trips like this regularly. If you’re already spending money every month, you can turn that into travel. You just need the right setup.
